Symptom: Washer - Will Not Drain
Symptom: Noisy pump
Repair Time: 2 Hours
Tools: Phillips screwdriver, pliers, flat screwdriver, flashlight, 10mm socket, extension and ratchet, paper towels
My LG front load washer was not draining and showed an OE error. The drain pump was making abnormal noises. After disassembly, the drain pump motor was found to be filled with water and black sediment. The impeller and shaft seemed to be a loose fit in the front bearing. I assume the bearing failed and destroyed the seal letting water & sediment into the housing. The wobbling impeller eventually became loose on the shaft and would not spin even when the motor was turning.
While installing the pump, I noticed one of the 3 rubber isolation pump mounts was damaged and may have to be replaced at some point in the future.
The new LP2001T drain pump fit perfectly. Assembly of the rest of the machine was easy if you remember where all the screws go! The door boot spring was a bit tough to install by hand. I used a small screw driver to stretch the spring and worked the wire onto the boot with my other hand. I held the other side of the spring and wire with my knee to keep it from pulling out. It took 3 attempts! A spring plier tool would be nice but not necessary. I also removed the door boot drain elbow / pipe and cleaned out the gunk. Easy to do with everything apart.
Initially I was planning to do the repair from the bottom. I removed the rear cover to review the repair plan. The wiring bundle was secured with straps and bagged to prevent water ingress. It would have been extremely difficult to get it all back together from the bottom so I went with the front access method. Good choice. Other machines may be different.
After assembly the washer worked fine. The new pump sounded perfect. I decided to go with this pump (at a bit higher price) because the Manufacturer was identified and not some unknown supplier. Another good choice. Hopefully the manufacturer has identified and fixed the bearing & seal issue. The pump was on the shelf and waiting for local pickup.
I also removed the agitator dams inside the barrel. My machine has the roller balls on the agitators to prevent clothes from jamming. Although there are drains in these assemblies, there are many spots where water and gunk collects. They were a mess even though the tub-clean feature is used regularly. LG can do better on this design by making them tool-less to remove and easier to clean. If you don't want to see a mess, don't remove them and ignore it. Also don't forget to clean out the water inlet screens before you turn the washer on.
